Brain doctors

Today I had two doctor’s appointments, with different types of brain doctors!

First I saw my psych nurse. Since I injured my foot, I took my wheelchair to both appointments. Felix did a great job heeling into the office.

For the first time ever, they took my vitals. Felix did a good job just hanging out on the floor while they did the blood pressure cuff. Then we went back to the waiting room.

I got two pictures of Felix in the waiting room. One is from behind him as he’s lying down and surveying the door and rest of the waiting room. The second one, he is doing a paws up on my footplate and I am petting his head.

When my turn came, I got to meet one of the new psych nurses at the practice. She had me go to her office, which is one I hadn’t been in before. Unfortunately the desk for the office is so big that I couldn’t get past it to get to the normal seating area. I also couldn’t get far enough into the room to shut the door behind me. So I just had my appointment with me sitting in my wheelchair in the open doorway. Luckily I am very open about everything and don’t mind everyone knowing my business!

I liked the new psych nurse, she seemed very nice. But I think I didn’t give her an adequate picture of my life. I forgot to mention my anxiety at all!

When I was on my way out, she offered to go ahead of me to get the door to the waiting room, but it is a narrow hallway and I knew I’d just run over her feet, so I said I could get it. She was very impressed at how well Felix and I went through the door! He is so so good at doorways with my wheelchair now!

After resting a bit at home, it was time for my neurologist appointment. This one Brad wanted to come to. It was all the way in Lancaster, a 45-minute drive. I used my wheelchair again because of my foot. Felix did very well while I was checking in, and also while I was filling out paperwork.

While we were waiting in the waiting room, he did pretty well at lying at my feet. There was a piece of something on the floor that he got interested in and really wanted to investigate, but after a few times of me telling him to leave it, he just lay down and stared at it LOL.

We got pictures of Felix hanging out while I did paperwork, him heeling next to my wheelchair, him doing a touch and sitting next to my wheelchair, him standing between our wheelchairs, and him lying down looking upset at me that I won’t let him investigate the little thing on the floor.

When they came to call us back to the room, they realized we were both in wheelchairs, so had us wait while they removed the chairs from the room—so nice! They didn’t say a word about Felix!

We fit in the room just fine, and the nurse did my intake. Felix lay on the floor in front of me while she was doing my intake. Then it was time for my blood pressure. I asked her if she’d like me to hold Felix while she did the blood pressure, and she mentioned that she was actually deathly afraid of dogs! I apologized and immediately moved Felix between Brad and my wheelchairs. He did a good job of staying there while she took my blood pressure.

Before the doctor came in, we got a picture of Brad in his pink pants and scarf, purple vest, brown shirt, and pink and purple and straw hat with pink and purple in it. We also got a couple of pictures of Felix between our wheelchairs. And Brad got three pictures of me. In two of them I’m posing beautifully, and in the third I am holding my head like I have a horrible headache.

When the doctor came in, Felix held his position on the floor in front of me. She sat down and we started talking. We talked for probably 45 minutes and Felix just hung out in the same spot on the floor the whole time. I was SO proud of him! I didn’t use any treats today at all, and he just stayed there chilling the whole time. I didn’t even have his mat down!

Then the doctor wanted to do a physical exam. Felix wasn’t perfect during the physical exam. For the most part he just stood there, but two or three times, he went over and sniffed her leg. Oh well. I apologized and she said she didn’t mind.

The neurologist said that she thinks I probably have migraines. Since Imitrex didn’t work for me, she prescribed another migraine med. But she’s not sure insurance will approve it. She is also going to have me do an MRI. And she discussed some stretches I can do to reduce the tension in my neck because apparently I’m very tense! I have to go back in three months to see her again.

It was a long appointment, about an hour! So we were wiped when we left and headed straight home. Here’s hoping insurance approves things quickly and I find something that helps!
