A dry time at the food bank

Felix and I went to the food bank again this morning. It was forecast to rain all morning, so we were prepared! I had Felix in his blue cloud raincoat, and I had a purple poncho on over me and my wheelchair. I got there an hour before they let people in, and I was already 18th in line! They serve 50 people a day, but about 60 showed up 🙁

While I was waiting in line, I talked with several people. They all had questions about Felix and service dogs. It was good to educate people about service dogs, and fun to talk about Felix. We naturally started talking about other peoples’ dogs and cats, as well. And the new cat cafe that’s going to open in Rock Hill!

One of the volunteers there came out to see if anyone wanted to borrow a sweater, and I asked if I could go in the wider side door instead of the really narrow main door. The last time I went through the narrow main door, which is only about 3/4 of an inch wider than my wheelchair, I ripped my wheelchair bag off and ruined it. I didn’t want that to happen again! The guy said he’d come back and let me in the side door right when they opened the main door. But he never came.

You know what else never came? The rain! I was sitting out there for an hour in my silly looking purple poncho and Felix in his very cute raincoat, and there was zero rain! I think I kept the rain away by being prepared. I also had an umbrella in my basket. But interestingly enough, my phone was saying that it was raining in Rock Hill the whole time I was out there! I got a picture of Felix and me in our rain gear; it’s below.

Eventually we got up to the main door for our turn, and someone else was able to ask them to let me in the side door. I got checked in, and got my number. They didn’t give me any problem about Felix not wearing his vest and having a raincoat on instead. Then we headed out to get the van and line up to get our groceries.

It started to sprinkle right as I got to the van. I got my groceries, and headed home.

Brad woke up when I got home to look over all that I got. It was a very good haul! Almost no desserts this time, yay! The only desserts we got were about 10 little individual cups of sorbet, which both Brad and I can eat!

We got quite a bit of meat, though one package had mold in it. The other stuff we got included salmon, chicken drumsticks, turkey breast for sandwiches, and bacon. We also got a HUGE frozen tray of mac and cheese. We got two loaves of bread and some hamburger buns, flavored seltzer drinks, root beer, two packs of coleslaw mix, romaine lettuce, 6 packs of freshly made chicken alfredo, halo oranges, two bunches of bananas, a ton of cheese, eggs, milk, coffee creamer (I’ll put it in my smoothies), lots of canned veggies, rice, cheese crackers, pretzels, canned beef, and a few other assorted things.

Some of the stuff they gave us, Brad and I can’t eat or don’t like, so we have a pile of stuff to give to others, as well.

But overall this is one of the better hauls we’ve gotten from the food bank!
