A scary doggy health day

Alice continues to not eat that well, and Felix as well. Both Alice and Felix stopped eating great about two or three months ago. We thought they were bored with their food so tried changing proteins, veggies, and spices.

Two weeks ago Alice’s food intake went down drastically, and Felix got a staph infection. So we got Felix antibiotics and started on the Alice saga. Felix’s food intake went down drastically immediately after that, but we thought it was from the antibiotics.

After 9 days on the antibiotics, he was hardly eating so we stopped them early. His appetite didn’t improve.

Over the weekend, both Felix and Alice were getting the appetite stimulant. They are getting nearly full rations of food, but we have to feed them every three hours and hand feed them to get that, which is not sustainable.

So today we took Felix in to the vet about not eating. Now that it’s clear Felix and Alice have the same symptoms, though Felix’s is delayed from Alice’s, the vet is concerned there is something going that both of them have caught. Maybe a virus or bacteria.

The vet spent about 45 minutes with us going over Felix very carefully, and took a stool sample to send off for testing. It will test for both good and bad bacteria in the system.

Other possibilities are something in the home that is causing them both to be ill (and maybe whatever it is that is causing them to be ill is also causing my nausea).

So we have a lot more to look into. The stool bacteria testing takes three weeks. So we will limp through the next three weeks with the appetite stimulant, and hope that we figure out some answers soon!

We are supposed to go to DC soon for a vacation with my dad, but I’m thinking if the dogs still aren’t eating well, we will have to cancel.

We intended to head straight home after the vet, drop the dogs off, and then head to Brad’s parents house for lunch, but we were running so late that we ended up bring Felix and Alice with us to their house.

That left Hestia home alone.

When we got home, we heard strange barking and rushed around trying to find Hestia. Turns out she had gotten her head wedged into the baby gate to Tam’s room! She had peed herself she was so upset.

I was able to get her out pretty quickly, and she doesn’t seem to be in any pain, though she is making more noise than usual when she breathes. So we will keep an eye on her tonight and see if we need to rush her to the emergency vet, or if she needs an appointment tomorrow at the regular vet.

What a day with dog health!

While we were in the waiting room at the vet, we got pictures of Alice sitting on Brad’s lap and Felix sitting on mine. They are Japanese Chin. I am wearing mint green, and Brad is wearing a dark green hat and vest.
